A tier one wireless operator adapts to the unprecedented growth in smartphones

Faced with the prospect of declining profitability of their unlimited, fixed-price data plan and rapidly increasing data consumption, this Operator was challenged to create new data pricing plans compatible with a wide mix of wireless devices, each supporting different browser rendering technology making consistent, measurable billing nearly impossible.

SOLUTION |
Over a 12-week period, Alchemic Solutions created a comprehensive product and technology analysis document and a pricing model simulator. In collaboration with Acta Wireless and leveraging the combined network of industry contacts, Alchemic Solutions issued a product survey and was able to illicit quick responses from a half-dozen browser vendors with minimum delays. We then analyzed the browsing vendor’s solutions to estimate their corresponding data consumption by classes of browsers: client-only, proxy-based, server-based.

RESULTS |
The analysis document and pricing model simulator was utilized by the Operator to create the optimal pricing plan for the different classes of devices. The simulator also highlighted the “profitable point” of usage-based pricing, preparing them for the oncoming growth of smartphones and unprecedented data usage now commonplace in the market.
